Spitsbergen Up Close

What is life like in the world’s northernmost settlement?

The archipelago shared with the world’s largest land predator, a 40 km road network with no connections to other places on Svalbard, about 1,300 km as the crow flies to the North Pole and limited alcohol purchases.

EVERYDAY LIFE

Insights into everyday life in the Arctic

Longyearbyen is located on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, which belongs to Norway. It is the northernmost permanently inhabited settlement in the world! Only 1,300 kilometers from the North Pole, the people here live in extreme conditions – midnight sun and polar nights, neighbors such as snow foxes and reindeer, houses that stand on stilts, and in winter you are more likely to travel by snowmobile than by car.

THE NORTHERNMOST

The settlement of superlatives

As Longyearbyen is the northernmost permanently inhabited settlement in the world, it may come as no surprise that there are also many “northernmost” things to be found here. There is the northernmost hospital, the northernmost supermarket, probably the northernmost soccer pitch and the northernmost airport with regular flights. A place where life still works under extreme conditions – everything a little further north!
